You may know Marina Caldarone, our Drama Director, who has worked in many of the NCDT drama schools as a Guest Director and tutor and who offers an extremely successful Voice Over CD workshop (most recently presented at Rose Bruford College, Welsh College of Music and Drama, Central and Mountview). As you know, Hobson’s Voice Over agency now offers an annual award open to Drama Schools in acknowledgement of excellence in the commercial and documentary fields (neither of which is covered in the Carleton Hobbs). This might be an area that some of you won’t necessarily have focused on with the 3rd year to date - Crying Out Loud’s Voice Over workshop is tailor made to get the student up to speed within these areas, using the best available scripts. The workshop also explains the CD’s function within the industry, how actors go about getting work in this medium, how the Spotlight clip/ ‘2 min megamix’ works, copyright issues and the all important ‘how to define your voice to generic type’, particularly in the commercials market. It is half theory, half practical - all students participate in defining each other’s particular and specific vocal qualities which is great fun as well as informative. 

This workshop is also available at The Actors Centre London and Manchester. 

As well as being a Radio Drama producer, Marina has also been coaching students, successfully, for the BBC Carleton Hobbs competition for the last 9 years, she co-wrote the Radioactive series for Methuen with Marilyn Le Conte, as well as ‘ACTIONS – an actors’ thesaurus’, so she is fully ‘tooled up’ dramaturgically speaking, to work with the 3rd year drama student.

We charge whatever you at the school reasonably offer as a workshop rate, it is 3 hours long and will take a maximum of 40 at any one time (though we have offered the workshop in the past to East 15 with over 100 students) it really depends on how interactive you would like it to be for your students. We advise ahead of time what we would like the student to provide, so there is some lead in preparation, but technically all we need is a CD player and a quiet space.
